A protective upbringing. Parents who didn’t talk much.
Are there any taboos or things that you can’t discuss with your parents?
Mentioning sex and disappointments were all taboo.
Do you feel close with your Asian roots or not?
Yes, especially taking care of each other. And when I see certain people around me acting distant.
Did you ever feel ashamed of you being Asian?
No, I think it is a pity that we are modest.
Did you ever had a role model when you grew up?
There were no role models in my time.
What do you think of the Asian representation in The Netherlands?
We are represented in work, but not really.
What made you who you are now?
Have people also made comments about you being Chinese? How did you react to this, what did you feel?
I am seen as a Hindu, and that is seen as positive. I’m born Muslim (not really practicing), some people don’t understand that.
What are stereotype Asians in your opinion and where does that come from? Do you see other Asians like those stereotypes?
Workers, the people who are not visible. That’s because of history: we were nothing, we were poor and happy to be able to work elsewhere (while being exploited).
What stereotypes and comments have you heard about your appearance?
Cute and stupid.
What racist remarks and discrimination have you experienced?
No, only something has to happen in the media then one finger is pointed to you.
What is a funny trait or tell something that not everyone knows about you
Unfortunately can’t speak Hindustani well.
In Asian culture, it is normal as a woman to get married as soon as possible, have children, and become a housewife. Because when you have a husband, you have children, you have “made” it in life. How do you see it?
The fixed norms culture, fortunately we now see that ‘house, tree best is not always right.
